Drive structures

My computer, Badgerfish, is set up as follows.

I have 40Gb Drive partitioned into two partitions –

C: for the operating system (just under 20Gb)
D: for music (Just over 20GB)

I have a 30Gb Drive partitioned into four partitions –

E: for Games (19Gb)
F: for My digital archive
G: for the Wife’s digital archive and
U: which is a hidden 4Gb partition for the swap file.

I also have a 160Gb SATA drive (M:) which I use to store large files such as disk images of movies and games, my working My Documents folder, my current My Pictures folder and a few other odds and sods.

H: I: J: K: are DVD drives/writers and virtual DVD (image) drives

L: is used for USB flash drives and other devices.

The drive letters are all historic and their usage dates back to my early computing days. I also try to use a keyboard rather than a mouse (where possible) so knowing the drive letters helps especially in DOS (I know…I’m a really sad meff)

I have ordered an 80Gb harddrive and intend to set up the PC as follows:-

Continue to use the 40Gb Drive as the Primary Master partitioned as follows:-

  • the Operating system drive – C: (30Gb)
  • A pagefile partition (2Gb) – Z:
  • 9Gb Games partition – D:

The 80Gb drive will be set as the Primary Slave and partitioned as follows:-

  • E: will be the Music partition and it shall be 20Gb’s in size to match my MP3 player’s capacity
  • F: will contain my digital Archive and my “My Documents” folder it will be 15Gb in size
  • G: also 15Gb in size and containing the wife’s “My Documents” and Digital Archive

I’ll pinch a gig or two for X: which will contain a page file

The new partition M: (what ever is remaining) will act as the funky new workspace for my VHS/DVD conversion project

and N: will be the old M: (SATA 160GB) renamed but still used as a depository for static files such as disk images.

It is all very exciting though I am tempted to have a drive devoted solely to pictures….maybe I’ll just use some of the space I’ll free up from the M: drive…

Roll on Thursday.
