Picture of the Day: Holy Well, Southam, Warwickshire [2010]

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the area I now live in has some curious and ancient locations. One such location is the Holy Well near Southam in Warwickshire.

An ancient site where once pilgrims from all over visited in their legion, to bathe and be blessed by powerful earth magic and perform ancient rituals.

The site is difficult to reach, more so these days with the nearby encroachment of HS2 works, but rewards those determined to view the natural spring where more recently respecting land owners have constructed a ritual plaza.

I visited the site 23 years ago while out geocaching and also saw swans and cows. Recently I have felt the need to revisit but with HS2 work nearby, I fear my memory of the peacefulness of the place might be ruined by noise from the worksite.

What mysterious rituals were once performed there? When did it pass into obscurity? Why are similar places like Glastonbury and Lourdes more popular or remembered? I guess legends from those places draw visitors and yet no doubt there were once stories of old about Southam, now forgotten leaving the once mystic site in obscurity.
